Tax Return Shop FAQs

Support Agent -

Q. What will I be paid?

A. You are paid a shopper fee PLUS reimbursment for your taxes when successfully completed as per the directions.

Q. I don't have my W-2, but my due date is approaching.

A. W-2s are mailed by your employer and not all of them come at the same time.  Most of them should arrive by Jan 31.

Q. Can I make my appointment without my W-2's?

A. That is up to the tax office.  Each one has rules on when you can make an appointment.  Please check with them to see if you make your appointment before having your paperwork in hand.

Q. Do I need an appointment?

A. That is up to the tax office you are visiting.  Please call to check on that office's procedures.

Q. Can the shops be done in March?

A. No, i'm sorry mid February is the end of the project and all shops must be submitted by then.

Q. The tax office did not give me my copies.  Now what?

A. Please call them and request a copy.  You should have gotten a copy when you paid, if that did not happen, please contact them.

Q. Does my spouse have to join me?

A. Yes, your spouse must be at the appointment with you are you are filing jointly.

A few questions about these tax shops. 1. Even though fees are reimbursed, can the fees be deducted from refund? 2. What if the preparer shows a refund less than what should be received? 3. We live in an area where we also have a local tax prepared separate from federal and state. Is this also included in the preparation or is this for only federal and state?

Hi Jennifer, Thanks for your questions! Regarding #1, we are not attorneys or tax professionals in any way, so unfortunately could not provide the answer to this questions. You're welcome to consult with a professional to see if the fees can be deducted on your 2016 return. Regarding #2, if you find that the refund will be less than $400 when you are actually in the tax appointment, you would need to cancel the filing of your return. Our client will not accept a shop where the refund was less than $400. You can tell the preparer that you wish to think about it but don't want to file yet. Or, you may continue, but if you do this you will pay for the preparation yourself and not be paid the shopper fee. Regarding #3, the preparer should prepare local taxes, too, but that would be something to confirm with the location. Thank you!

On these particular tax offices, what is an estimate of costs to have taxes done?

This would depend on the particular tax preparer, and you're welcome to ask them when you call to make an appointment. The costs will be reimbursed, however.
